Denim chic: Turn your dull jeans into statement pieces

I think we can agree that denim is all the rave these days. Outside denim being super trendy it's a classic and timeless item, so it would come at no surprise that denim is no longer just your moms favorite jeans. In the past denim was considered a more dressed down look, but over the years it has become an essential piece of a chic look. There is just something about the right pair of denim jeans & a show stopping heel that will forever be a fashionistas go to look. I wanted to give you some visual aid to show you the many different ways you can rock your denim.

How do you feel about the denim craze? Here to stay or will fade away?

Remember style is what you make it!!

This look is the perfect example of denim & pumps being timeless. The oversized long cardigan or blazer is a HUGE trend right now that adds that extra something that makes this outfit denim chic. For more fashion inspiration check out www.thedaileigh.com

This look features again the boyfriend jeans. I absolutely adore the little something extra this simple yellow blouse adds to the look.

Style Stalking: Toya

This weeks style stalked is a woman that wears many hats and she wears them quite well if I do say so myself. Toya is a sales & marketing professional, mother, wife and now she has added personal style blogger to her resume. I can respect any mother who has not lost her sense of self, all too often women get caught up in the day to day needs of their family that they forget to make time for themselves. The Justfab.com brand ambassador likes to set the example for women of all walks of life that it is ok to set the inner diva loose.

Her style is professional chic!

She is not afraid to let the colors speak!

1. When did you fall in love with fashion?
I fell in love with fashion at the end of my 8th grade year. I was so obsessed with my personal style I wrote down my outfits on a calendar everyday after I arrived home from school. I wanted to be sure that I did not repeat an item of clothing too often or too soon.

2. What /who is your style inspiration?

I am inspired by Alicia Keys. Her style is both classy and sexy all together.

3. How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as classy, sexy, and daring at times.

This weekend I had the pleasure of covering an event presented by True beauty studios. The event covered everything from natural hair care to bridal gown collections. Owner of True Beauty Studios set out to bring Hampton Roads an event like no other. It's rare that you see events that have all 3 components that this event had, it was power packed with information and loaded with tons of vendors.

Keynote speaker Jonna Scott-Blakes of Naturally-Glam.com spoke on the importance of branding. This was the perfect subject to speak on given the networking opportunity the event offered. Jonna gave some suggestions on how to better take your brand to the next level:

1. Pick a standout name
2. Do your research to make sure that the name is not already taken
3. Focus on what your business is going to be about
4. Stay relevant & consistent

These were just some of the points she touched on, make sure that you follow her blog for more helpful information regarding building your brand, natural hair care, fashion and so much more.

Master hair stylist and salon owner Fawnne of Salon Noa in Virginia Beach, Va was another guest speaker and she provided healthy hair care tips regardless if you are natural or not. Fawnne understands her role as a hair care professional is to share her knowledge with  clients so that they are able to make an informed decision regarding their hair. For the fashion portion of the event Richmond Designers Chrissy Crawford(L) of shoprunwaycouture.com & Lakisha Greene(R) of Lelamonefashioninc.com had their lines rip the runway. These ladies are definitely trend setters and blazing ahead in their own lanes. Fashion is more than just about the clothes, it's how you achieve your own personal style that sets you apart. These two ladies are definitely making their mark. Visit my youtube channel www.youtube.com/user/NaturalAllure761 to catch footage from the event that includes looks from both collections.

Style Stalking: Cynthia

This weeks style stalked is savvy mortgage professional Cynthia. She shows us her style is both fun, colorful and professional. Just because you have a corporate 9-5 does not mean you have to lose your sense of style. You are only confined to the walls you create. In some way or another people feel fashionably bound by their jobs, and sure if you have to wear a uniform it would be pretty hard for you to pull off that weekend street style. However, there is always a way to incorporate your own personal style no matter what your profession!

What are your thoughts?

1. I fell in love with fashion as a young teen.  I've always had thing for clothes, shoes and my FAV bags! One of my favorite trends right now is coloring blocking.

2. Some of my fashion inspiration are Evelyn Lazoda (I love her Maxi Dresses), Lisa Raye and Raquel (Only on the show single ladies), Emily B(I'm loving her shoe collection right now) and Ritora(I would never wear half the stuff she wears but she inspires me to think out side the box on a casual level.

3.  I would describe my style as classy, classic, sexy and trendy professional.  I'm a business woman so even when I'm casual I have to maintain a level of professionalism and class.

I am a Realestate professional and I assist people with their financing needs for purchasing a home.  I work one on one with clients to help them build wealth.  We don't just sell homes we sell a lifestyle.  For more information on wealth building contact me directly at cynthia@oldvam.com or 757.822.0330.

When did you fall in love with fashion?

Fashion caught my eye in my high school years, but I fell in love with the art of style in my early 20s. I started collecting fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, InStyle and my brain focused more on the angle in which the photographer shot, the way the stylist styled the models, the props used etc. I tried to understand why stylists took such risks in putting pieces together knowing damn well no one is actually going to wear it, styled the same way walking down the street, except, maybe Anna Dello Russo! I am not a fashion fanatic. Never was and never will be. I just love items that moves me and speaks to my spirit.

What or who are some of your fashion inspirations?

I get inspiration from some of the most random things! Like, on my Instagram page is a picture of a Tiffany Blue door with gold hardware. I was having such a bad day, but when I saw this door, it made me so happy! Anywho, when looking at this door, what do I see? A white button down blouse, with a Tiffany Blue pleated midi skirt, leopard pumps, a ponytail and medium size gold drop earrings. I see inspiration in art, music, décor, pain and recently the homeless. Pay close attention to them. Their outfits may not look like anything at first glance, but if you take a second look, you can really get great ideas.

How would you describe your style?

classic, colorful, chic with little surprise on every look!

Protective styles: You hair will thank you

A very important part of any naturals journey or any hair journey for that matter is getting to know your hair. It is important to know what works well for your hair so that you are better prepared for the changing seasons. My hair is finally getting to a length were I have to pay attention to what work well for my me, its much more than just knowing what products work for you. During the winter months my hair loves as little manipulation as possible. I have a very dry scalp, which in the summer time is not much of a problem because I sweat in my head, which adds moisture thus not allowing my hair to dry out. Now the catch 22 to my protective styles is that I cannot wear them longer than 3 weeks to a month because my scalp gets extremely dry. This is not a bad thing for me since I like to switch my styles up often. However if you are not like me and would like to get more wear out of your protective style, but have a dry scalp here are a few suggestions:
1. If you are getting braids or any other style were your scalp will be exposed, make sure you thoroughly wash & deep condition your hair, this will help with moisture to allow the style to last longer.
2. Make sure that you are still protecting your hair at night with a satin scarf, bonnet or pillow case. I am sure you have heard this before, cotton absorbs moisture and is not your friend.
3. Find a oil or moisturizer that works for you, currently my favorite oil is Africa's Best: Ultimate herbal oil.
I purchased mine from my local Dollar General for
$2.00 I am sure you can find it in your local beauty supply store. It can be used for many things, hot oil treatment, bath & body and for dry skin. It works great for my hair.

4. Get to know your hair, love your hair. If you learn what you hair likes and doesn't like you can save yourself from headaches and wasted time. There is no wrong or right way to take care of YOUR hair, so try as many different things until you get what works for you!!

Below are a few protective styles I have been rocking for the past couple of months.

How well do you know your hair?
